Cullgen is a privately held biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the development of first-in-class new chemical entities (NCEs) for the treatment of diseases lacking effective therapeutic approaches. We are developing our proprietary technology platform, uSMITE™, for ubiquitin-mediated, small molecule-induced target elimination, especially those disease-causing protein targets previously considered as undruggable.

Cullgen is initially focusing on the development of therapeutics for oncology, neuropathic pain and inflammatory diseases. Cullgen is also making major efforts in advancing the technology of targeted protein degradation, concentrating on the discovery of novel E3 ligands.

Embracing the globalization of healthcare R&D, Cullgen has initiated drug discovery and business development efforts in the United States, Japan and China to build a strong, collaborative and efficient international drug discovery platform.

Position Summary

Reporting directly to the CFO, the Senior Director/Corporate Controller will play a key role in overseeing the company’s finance and accounting functions. This position involves developing financial plans, company-wide and project specific budgets, monitoring the financial well-being of the organization, establishing an effective internal control environment and identifying and mitigating financial risks. Incumbent will directly supervise an Assistant Controller/International Finance Director as well as an Accountant. This an office-based position in San Diego.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborating with the CFO and the executive management team to formulate and execute a comprehensive strategy for the finance and accounting function.

  • Overseeing financial reporting, accounting, budgeting, internal controls, tax compliance, and administrative functions.

  • Establishing and managing purchasing and procurement procedures.

  • Providing financial analyses and budget recommendations.

  • Demonstrating a deep understanding of financial and expense business drivers and trends related to research and development including pre-clinical and clinical activities, especially in an early stage environment.

  • Developing and communicating financial performance metrics.

  • Ensuring compliance with all regulatory and corporate requirements related to financial and accounting functions.

  • Applying U.S. GAAP principals to all financial functions.

  • Working closely with the legal to review corporate contracts for budgeting, accounting and forecasting implications.

  • Preparing the Company for an eventual initial public offering.

  • Recognizing risks and deficiencies in the company, generating a corrective plan, and implementing a solution.

  • Undertaking other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting or Finance.

  • Active CPA license required

  • 15 years experience in accounting and finance, preferably in the life science or biotechnology industry.

  • Experienced in generating complex financial modeling.

  • Demonstrated experience in establishing and enhancing internal and external controls, and preparing and coordinating third-party annual audits.

  • Experience in scaling financial organizations to meet the complexity of a platform-based biotech company with multiple clinical-stage programs and therapeutic areas.

  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent oral and written communication abilities.

  • Deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP standards.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and NetSuite.
